The Internet Space

In the Internet Space there are three major players that have to be considered
- The Elite Hacker
- The Search Engine
- World Governments
The Elite Hacker
The Internet has change in many ways since the days of Dr. Fred Cohen
(possibly one of the world’s leading experts at that time)
did his theoretical research on “Viral Programs” starting about 1977,
His dissertation was presented in 1986 as part of the requirements
for a doctorate in electrical engineering from
the University of Southern California.
History of Computer Viruses by Robert M. Slade
(Copyright Robert M. Slade, 1992)

In today’s world the classical “Computer Virus” is almost obsolete
replaced by the “Trojan” the “Worm” various “Spyware” components
and the infamous “RootKit”.
The so-called “Black Hat” community has virtually no interest these days
in creating “Prank” or harmful code whereas now the emphasis is primarily on “Stealth”.
There are three very important things one must understand about this “Rouge Software
Phenomenon” referred to as “Hacking” as it applies to the Internet Space:
- There are only a very small number of individuals who
are the very “vanguard” or core nucleus of this development;
the ones who write the “primary code” and create the so-called
“tools” that drive this engine (referred to here as the “Elite Hacker”).
- Just as the “General Public” has the misconception that
every malware component is a “virus” they also tend to think
every “low-end” computer criminal is a hacker
so there is a terminology vacuum at present.
(Elite Hackers for the most part have no interest or need
to engage in things like Identity Theft or Spam)
- The so-called Anti-Virus Software companies lost the so-called
“Virus War” at least three or so years ago with the advent of
the Sasser and Blaster Worms.

There is a thing I call “The IT Security Myth” (My new book coming soon);
with the advent of the RootKit the very simple fact is that there is virtually
no complete protection from an “Elite” Hacker attack in the Internet Space
at this present time.

The Search Engine
The raw power and effect of the “Search Engine” in the Internet Space
cannot be over emphasized. The Search Engine has long sense replaced
the “Browser” in importance and may very well itself be replaced
(with regards to its dominance) in two to five years after the purchase of Yahoo
by Microsoft.
(Remember Netscape?).
The (Dem) Congress and the White House are at odds regarding a Bill,
which involves protection from prosecution for “Internet Companies”
providing “special information”.
(Most importantly SE companies).
This development has placed the Search Engine in a position of even
more colossal dominance and importance in the Internet Space possibly
more so than the Win O/S is in the PC/Server hardware space.
World Governments
Governments around the world are very heavily involved in the Internet
Space for what one might call “information gathering of a stealth nature”.
Of coarse they have harnessed the raw power of the Elite Hacker by both
enlistment and persuasion.
Without naming Governments we can safely say that there are not many Governments
on the planet that are not seriously involved and very interested in
the Internet Space.
This heavy “World Government” involvement will have drastic,
dramatic and sweeping effects on the Internet Space one of which may be
to reduce (over time) the “low-end computer criminal element” where it
interferes or clashes with its operations.
Conclusion
The Internet Space is about to undergo tremendous changes in the next few years
it will become (in a very qualified general sense) “somewhat” safer and more secure
(on a basic e-commence encrypted level) while at the same time far less secure
(for most non-encrypted private and business systems) and also far less private
for all systems.
The interface between major Networks (which are still in a very primitive state)
will take off soon with the advent of advances like “Gigabit Routers”
and more importantly Protocol Standardization Agreements in various areas,
which unblock universal interface.
